Finding Aid Collection

The Finding Aid collection contains finding aids and inventory lists for most of the physical and digital collections. Think of a finding aid as an annotated Table of Contents. Each finding aid contains a descriptive inventory which gives the physical information about the collection.

The Board of Trustees Collection currently consists of information regarding board member James Egert Allen. Highlights include his work with the YMCA, letters regarding alumni events at the university, and his memoir that recounts his time spent at Johnson C. Smith Universit

The Charlotte Post Collection

The Charlotte Post Collection contains photographs that span the ‘60’s through the early 2000’s. There are portraits of celebrities, pastors, politicians, civic leaders along with photos of everyday people including infants, children, young adults and the elderly. The collection photos cover speeches, award ceremonies and much more

Golden Legacies Oral History Project

The Golden Legacies Oral History Project features interviews of past Johnson C. Smith University students and their experiences at the school. Each interview showcases a different aspect of the JCSU experience, such as being on the track team or part of the choir

Historic West End Oral History Collection

The Historic West End Oral History collection contains the oral history interviews and transcripts from talks with the residents of neighborhoods in the Historic West End section of Charlotte, North Carolina.

JCSU Audiovisual Collection

The JCSU Audiovisual Collection consists of digitized recordings of events that occurred on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University during the late 1930s and into the mid 1940s. Highlights include recordings by the Biddle Quintet, President H. L. McCrorey’s appearance on the radio program “Wings Over Jordan,” the funeral service of Mrs. McCrorey, and an interview with football players before a game against Virginia Tech University in 1940.

JCSU Catalog Collection

The JCSU Catalog Collection is part of a larger collection housed by the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center. This collection of 95 school catalogs spans from 1878 to 2008. Catalogs are also housed in the Black Heritage Room.

JCSU History Collection

The University History Collection is made up of 20 original letters, speeches, pamphlets, news articles, books, and other documents related to the founding of Johnson C. Smith University. It includes information on the founders and historic properties on and around campus.ohnson C. Smith Un

JCSU Publications

The JCSU Publications collection spans from the early 1900s to the mid 1980s. Publications include the Argus, Biddle Outlook, Johnson C. Smith University Bulletin, University Student News, and the JCSU Newsletter.

JCSU Yearbooks

The JCSU Yearbook Collection is part of a larger collection of yearbooks housed by the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center. This collection of 61 yearbooks spans from 1928 to 2017. Yearbooks are also housed in the Black Heritage Room.

Photograph Collection

The Photograph Collection consists of over 1500 photographs portraying life at JCSU from its early days as Biddle University through the 1990s. Highlights include athletics, campus buildings, student activities, and former school presidents.

Presbyterian Collection

The Presbyterian Collection provides information regarding the connection between Johnson C. Smith University and regional Presbyterian Churches. It includes 243 artifacts including church bulletins, correspondence, church histories, and information regarding the Synod of Catawba.

President H. L. McCrorey Collection

The President H. L. McCrorey Collection contains over 500 artifacts including correspondence, photographs, personal notes, and other ephemera surrounding the life and family of Dr. McCrorey. Highlights include speeches and prayers made by Dr. McCrorey, letters from his daughters Novella McCrorey Flannagan and Muriel McCrorey, and dedications of the McCrorey Theological Seminary and McCrorey YMCA in Charlotte, NC.

Records of the Director of Public Relations Moses S. Belton

The majority of records in this collection date from the 1960s, and primarily consist of thank you notes to corporate visitors on campus such as IBM and correspondence between Belton and Development Office staff, current and prospective students; scholarship, loan, and award recipients; non-profit and religious organizations; alumni; and the press. Also included are publications such as Urban League Newsletter from the National Urban League.

Senior Papers

The Senior Papers are a graduation requirement for all students here at Johnson C. Smith University who must complete a paper in their specific discipline. Upon completing the paper students agree to make their paper available to future JCSU students for study. Physical papers are housed in the Black Heritage Room. Digital copies of papers from 1993 to the current year are available online.
